Champlain College
Burlington, VTTENTATIVE AGENDA: 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon: Mich Kabay (Norwich University) and Gary Kessler (Champlain College) will lead a session and discussion titled "An Introduction to Information Security for Managers and Other Non-Techies." This talk will be a non-technical overview of information security, primarily oriented towards managers of organizations and/or managers who need to deal with infosec/IT people or issues. The idea is to bring non-techies up to speed about infosec issues, concerns, etc. but describe this in terms of how it affects one's business, agency, organization, business partner, employees, etc.
This session is open to ANYONE with an interest/need to know who wishes to attend.
1:30-4:30 p.m.: General business meeting (also open to the infosec/IT public)
The technical portion of the meeting will cover issues around computer forensics, network forensics, and security incident response. What should you do if you see an attack in progress? Who can you call for help? How do you maintain business continuity? How do you analyze the network and systems and patch your holes? How do you find lingering compromises? What if a crime is committed or you suspect one is being committed with a computer in your organization. How is the system analyzed (and by whom)? What is the responsibility of law enforcement (and who do you call)? When does the ISP step in?
This is planned as leader-led discussions with roundtable input; all of us have had some unique experience(s) worth sharing as well as questions to ask! Anticipated speakers include:
- Det. Sgt. Mike Schirling (Burlington P.D.): Computer forensics
- George Bakos (Dartmouth Institute for Security Technology Studies): Network forensics/incident analysis
- Bill Scherr (Electronics Warfare Associates): Incident response procedures
Some notes:
- RSVPs to Gary Kessler for the morning and afternoon sessions would be appreciated so that we are sure that the facility is the right size and that we have enough morning coffee/pastry and afternoon water/snacks. RSVPs are not required!!
- Lunch is not formally included in the day but we will have a 1.5-hour lunch break. Lunch is available upstairs in Hauke in The View, a restaurant run by Champlain College's Hotel/Restaurant Management majors, or the college's cafeteria. We are also a pleasant 8-minute walk to Church Street in Burlington where there are a bunch of restaurants. This is a great time to network with other people in the group!
- It's summer so parking is available on campus!!
DIRECTIONS (Campus map)Champlain College is mostly located along Maple Street and So. Willard Street in Burlington. The Hauke Family Campus Center (Bldg. 24 on the map) is located near the southeast corner of the intersection of Maple and So. Willard Streets. There is some parking right next to the building, with a larger lot near the northwest corner of that intersection.
If arriving into Burlington on I-89...
- Exit the interstate at Exit 14-W (Burlington). You will pass the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center on your right and see the UVM campus just ahead; this is Main Street.
- Follow Main Street through the campus and an interminable number of stop lights. As you go through the campus, stay in the left lane.
- The light at So. Prospect Street marks the far edge of the UVM campus.
- The next light is So. Willard Street; turn left here.
- The STOP sign is Maple Street. The Hauke Building is across the street on the left. Turn right to get to the main parking lot (which will be on your right).
If arriving into Burlington from the south on U.S. Rt. 7...
- Continue north on Rt. 7 into Burlington and follow all signs for Rt. 7.
- A couple of blocks after you see a Dunkin' Donuts on the right, you will come to what is almost a rotary... it's actually a big planter in the middle of the road that everyone drives around. At that point, the main road and path of least resistance veers off to the left; Rt. 7 veers off to the right and puts you onto So. Willard Street.
- Continue until you get to the STOP sign at Maple Street. The Hauke Building is a large brick building to your right (on the right). The main parking lot is across the street and to the left.
- If you miss the veer to Rt. 7/So. Willard St., do not panic!! Continue straight until you reach Maple Street and turn right. When you get to the STOP sign at So. Willard, the Hauke Building is ahead on the right and the main parking lot is over your shoulder on the left.
